2012 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New engines, more models. introductionsmooth and quiet, the ford f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain at construction sites, around farms and over utility roads, and on the open highway. Its steering is nicely weighted and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. For 2011, the f-150 received a new engine lineup and electric-assist steering on all but 6. 2-powered crew cabs. For 2012, the lariat limited model is no longer offered, but one of the nine f-150 versions should be close enough. a new fx appearance package is for 2012 f-150 fx2 and fx4 models that includes 20-inch wheels and lots of flat-black trim inside and out. All 2012 f-150 4wd models can now be flat-towed behind another vehicle, like a motorhome or larger construction truck. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required, and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,550-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. (the ford super duty line of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) two v8 and two v6 engines are offered, all with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Standard on 2wd is a 302-hp 3. 7-liter v6. Other choices include a 360-hp 5-liter v8, the only engine offered on every cab/bed combination, a 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8 on supercrew short beds, and a 365-hp twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 on all but regular cab short beds. So it has to stay competitive: the standard v6 is more powerful than any other pickup v6 and the same horsepower as chevy's 1. 1-liter-larger v8; the 6. 2 offered in crew cabs and raptor is more powerful than any half-ton pickup engine; it's the only pickup that comes with a 6-speed automatic in every model. Supercab trucks add higher fx and lariat trim to choices plus svt's raptor, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet). A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty package. The supercrew f-150, available with either the short bed or standard bed, drops the stx grade and adds king ranch and platinum derivatives while harley-davidson is supercrew short bed only. the f-150 xl 22,990) is a standard bed, regular cab two-wheel drive. It comes with 3. 7-liter v6, 17-inch steel wheels, black bumper/grille/mirrors, and vinyl upholstery and floor covering. More equipment is available, including 18-inch wheels, sirius radio, sync, cruise control, fog lamps and power mirrors. many models of f-150, the longest bed in all three cab styles, are available with a heavy-duty payload package with 3. 5 and 5-liter engines. This is typically about $1,700 and required to get the maximum payload rating about 1,000 pounds heavier than standard f-150. It includes stouter parts underneath and 7-lug 17x7. 5 inch wheels. f-150 xlt 27,690) adds chrome for bumpers and trim, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic headlamps, carpeting, cruise control, power windows and locks, and better cloth upholstery. All manner of options are available on the xlt, including three wheel diameters, tailgate step, cargo management and towing equipment. f-150 fx4 37,480) and fx2 33,900) come with a 5-liter v8, black grille and body-colored bumpers, trim and mirrors. Chrome trim and bumpers highlight monotone paint, and the lariat adds heated mirrors with signal repeaters and auto-dimming on the driver's and inside, dual-zone climate control, heated power leather seats with driver memory, leather wheel with redundant audio controls, tow package, sync, trip computer, and power adjustable pedals. Options include 20-inch wheels, heated/cooled front seats, sony sound and navigation, trailer brake controller, rear camera and park sensors, and moonroof. f-150 king ranch 42,515) is like a lariat with a different attitude. It adds two-tone paint and kr badges, unique wheels, mesh chrome grille, chaparral leather heated and cooled power captain's chairs with driver memory, running boards, and power folding, heated, signal outside mirrors with chrome caps. Options are essentially limited to engines, a locking differential, alternative axle ratios, 20-inch wheels, sony sound and navigation systems, moonroof, chrome tube running boards and remote start. f-150 platinum supercrew 44,235) gets a unique satin chrome grille, body-color bumpers and wheel lip moldings, 20-inch wheels, power-deploy/retract running boards, satin chrome tailgate trim, tuxedo-stitched leather power captain's chairs, wood grain and brushed aluminum trim, rain-sensing wipers, power folding/heated mirrors, and unique console. It comes only with the 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8. Unique long-travel high-performance suspension, wheels and tires, and aggressive bodywork set it apart from any other f-150. A front camera is offered for seeing close-in obstacles or drops obscured by the hood. the f-150 option list is comprehensive and, although simplified in recent years, can still resemble the tax code to the uninitiated; there are, for example, many option codes for running boards and trailer towing mirrors. Most options are dependent on the model and other options, and many features are standard on more expensive models or go that way with engine upgrades. In addition, prices of options often vary by trim level. all prices listed above are just a starting point for the trim level. In many cases these upgrades add more standard equipment and/or a larger engine. Significant revisions make for a satisfying large sedan. introductionthe 2013 ford taurus is new, though it isn't all-new. It's not a new generation, just the current generation at its peak. This latest taurus has many significant changes for the 2013 model year, all good so far as we can see, from powertrain to interior to exterior, in that order. Three engines are available for the 2013 taurus. the standard 3. 5-liter v6 engine has been updated for 2013 for improved fuel economy, increased power and lower emissions. It's called ti-vct, for twin independent variable camshaft timing, a system that precisely times the valve openings to increase power, throttle response and fuel mileage, while reducing emissions. As a result, the 2013 taurus gets an epa-estimated 19/29 miles per gallon city/highway with front-wheel drive, 18/26 mpg with all-wheel drive. The 3. 5-liter v6 with ti-vct now makes 288 horsepower, a boost of 25 horsepower over the previous model. a new ecoboost 2. 0-liter engine expected to get 31 miles per gallon on the highway is an option, though not initially. Keeping in mind that the taurus is a full-sized car, these numbers make a statement about ford's commitment to improved fuel mileage with increased power. the twin-turbo ecoboost 3. 5-liter v6 that comes in the 2013 taurus sho has been pumped up to 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque beginning at a super-low 1500 rpm. Sho stands for super high output and this engine lives up to the moniker. The 2013 taurus sho engine delivers 17/25 mpg, according to the epa. Premium fuel is recommended. We got 19. 4 mpg running it fairly casually in the city, on a freeway, and on two-lanes; and 17. 6 mpg running it hard on a twisty two-lane. the 2013 taurus also gets a styling makeover, with a new hood, wider grille, cleaner front bumper and fascia, new wheels, new halogen projector beam headlamps, new deck lid, and led taillamps. Unlike the new 2013 ford flex that wiped out the traditional ford blue oval with chrome, the grille remains ford's signature three-bar with a blue oval (cool black mesh on the sho). A new trick is active grille shutters, that reduce aerodynamic drag at highway speeds. the 2013 taurus has presence: smooth, cool and muscular. Body-colored door handles and mirrors, with graceful headlamps; long horizontal slits for headlamps, that seem like they are as much on the corners and fenders of the car as on its face. Horizontal character lines travel under the door handles and streak rearward at the same level as the headlamps, as if they're an extension of speed. Taurus is a big car, larger than the midsize ford fusion and comparing with the chrysler 300, chevrolet impala, toyota avalon, and buick lacrosse. the interior gets a makeover for 2013 as well, a clean and stylish instrument panel, center stack, and console. There are rich materials on the graceful dash, and padding on the sides of the center console, where the driver's leg rests and is sometimes braced during cornering. the taurus is sweetly silent on the highway, thanks to work on sound insulation, namely behind the dash to keep engine noises at bay, in the wheelwells for road noise, and the a-pillars for wind noise. It's quiet also because the engine is so smooth, whether the ti-vct or ecoboost. as with other 2013 fords, the myfordtouch system of electronic control gets revamped, after being introduced just two years ago. It's standard on 2013 taurus limited and 2013 taurus sho models, using a terrific 8-inch touch screen on the center stack. Ford owners liked the idea but hated the execution on the 2011 models, so myfordtouch has been redesigned for 2013 to be simpler. What's more, the new myfordtouch can be downloaded by dealers into any ford vehicle that has the prior program. For daily driving the taurus with the 3. 5-liter v6 more than holds its own, including out where the roads weave and wind, which it handles with alertness and stability. The taurus is not a sports sedan. The ride is comfortable, as the suspension skillfully soaks up bumps. Power from the 3. 5-liter v6 is smooth and progressive, with no awkward gas pedal tip-in that many cars with electronic throttles have nowadays. The ti-vct v6 is even exhaust-tuned to deliver a satisfying little growl under acceleration. the 6-speed automatic selectshift transmission is seamless and well-programmed. Even in the se, there's a sport mode, with manual control using a thumb button on the side of the shift lever. lineup2013 ford taurus se, sel, and limited come standard with a 3. 5-liter v6 and 6-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available. Taurus sel awd 30,650) adds all-wheel drive. taurus limited 33,000) upgrades with perforated leather upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rearview camera, heated memory mirrors, puddle lamps, 19-inch premium painted aluminum wheels, ambient lighting, cargo net, myfordtouch with 8-inch center stack screen, color 4. 2' lcd instrument cluster screen, and power passenger seat. Taurus limited awd 34,850) adds all-wheel drive. taurus sho 39,200) comes standard with all-wheel drive and the twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 making 365 horsepower. Sho uses a beefier 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, a sport-tuned suspension, bigger brakes, and 19-inch wheels. The taurus sho comes with unique sho interior trim, pushbutton start, and top-grain leather-wrapped power tilt/telescope steering wheel, aluminum pedals, sync voice-activated communications and entertainment, hid headlamps, black mesh grille, black rear spoiler. Optional safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert, blind spot information system, and collision warning with brake support. Optional all-wheel drive can enhance handling stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundfor 2013, taurus gets a makeover with a new hood, wider grille, cleaner front bumper and fascia, new wheels, new halogen projector beam headlamps, new deck lid, and led taillamps. Thankfully the grille remains ford. S signature three-bar with a blue oval (cool black mesh on the sho), unlike the new flex that wiped out the oval with chrome. taurus has a presence now: muscular, smooth and cool. Body-colored doorhandles and mirrors, with graceful headlamps; long horizontal slits that seem like they. Re as much on the corners and fenders of the car, as on its face. Horizontal character lines under the door handles streak rearward at the same level as the headlamps, as if they. Re an extension of speed. from the side, following these lines, the rear deck looks like it was sliced off by a guillotine. With a chrome strip between the taillamps and across the vertical trunk lid, the tail does not look as good from the rear as it does from the side. It looks a bit like a chrysler. The sho carries a tidy black spoiler back there. the roofline is distinguished; we'd probably like it more without the chrome trim around the side windows. somehow, even with a 5-inch shorter wheelbase than the ford flex, the taurus body is as long as that seven-passenger people-hauler.
